Abstract
The purpose of this study was to survey about knowledge, experience and preference on advance directives (AD) among community and facility dwelling elderly. Ninety-five elderly with age of 65 and older were recruited from senior citizens` centers and community welfare centers; and eighty-six from nursing homes located in the city of Seoul and Gyeonggi province. The questionnaire consisted of 51 questions: 36 items to assess knowledge(9), experience(7), and preference(20) on AD; and 15 to ask general characteristics. Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program using descriptive statistics, x2-tests, Fisher`s exact tests, and t-tests. Results showed that most of participants had limited knowledge and experience about the AD; and it was more so for those in nursing homes. However, they expressed wishes to participate in decision making on the life-sustaining treatments for themselves and disliked the artificial prolongation of human life by the life-sustaining treatments. Therefore, various educational programs for elderly people needs to be developed, which focus on provision of information about AD as well as resources about consultation and communication channels. Most of all it is important to create the social environment that can naturally accept the discussions on AD.
